Although Abuse Bites has had many wonderful volunteers over the years, and great people come and go, the Freeman family make up the core team.
John
& Lisa--Both Ordained Ministers--He's the Jack of All Trades/ She's
the Founder and Speaker
Happily Married for 18 years. Both abuse survivors, John & Lisa have
raised 4 children all with special needs who were also abused. Both
are Ordained Ministers and have graduated from the International
School of Ministry. Lisa also holds a degree in Christian Ministry
from Vision International. Today John works at a factory and helps
out when he can; driving, filming, taking pictures and fixing
whatever needs repair. He's sort of the jack of all trades for the
program. He loves music, a Third Day Freak, and enjoys playing the
drums. Lisa works on the front lines ministering to others through speaking,
teaching,
books, counseling, and pet
therapy.
Robert was abused by his biological father, and bullied by his peers, which caused him to cut himself as a teen. He was a victim of work bullying, for which he suffered 2 nervous breakdowns and nearly died after a fatal cut on the arm. Thankfully he survived and hasn't cut himself since. Today he holds an Associates Degree and works for the Shiawassee Mental Health Center as a driver for their New Directions program and helps others with mental illness. He also drives us to events and works behind the video camera/camera. He enjoys walking, reading, and playing video games
Melissa--Dog
Trainer/ Photographer
Melissa was also abused by her biological father. She battled with severe anxiety and learning disorders. She was bullied all through school, and labeled gay, but later began mentoring others. She graduated from school with honors, works at Walmart as a Greeter, and helps train the dogs for the program. She also enjoys taking pictures and dabbling in art.
Jeremiah was almost bullied to death in school. He suffered severe anxiety attacks and was afraid to go to school. He tried to commit suicide three times. Thankfully his parents saw the warning signs and got him the help he needed. Soon after he began writing songs to inspire and help others who are abused/bullied. This past year he graduated from high school. Currently his story and song he wrote is being considered by MTV for an upcoming movie entitled "Bullied" that will feature kids all over the world. He also helps with the dogs, writes songs and sings, and loves playing sports.
Brian was also abused by his biological father and bullied terribly in school. He was also born with Asperger's Syndrome and only a half of heart. Doctors said he'd only live to be a year old, he turned 22 in June! He surpassed all the odds, graduated from high school with honors, and helped with the dogs in our program. He was on the heart transplant list for five years, but lived a fairly normal life at home. In the last few months of his life, Brian dieted, exercised, and lost more than 42 pounds! He always had a great attitude on life. He loved to cook and make people laugh. He lived and died forgiving his bullies. Read about how their CHANGING HEARTS for Brian.
Snickers AKA The Bully Buster
Certified Pet Therapy Dog, Mayor, Mascot
He was an abused, runaway dog. Since then Snickers wears many faces. He's made tracks all over Michigan to schools, libraries, churches, nursing homes, hospitals, work forces and to other events to Stop Abuse, Bullying, & Violence. He also helps Lisa teach pet therapy and dog care/training classes. Aside from that he loves performing tricks, loves treats even more, and jumps to the ceiling whenever Lisa grabs his leash to go bye bye.
Baby Ruth AKA The Bully

Baby is the typical Bully. She's a real stinker and acts vicious--barks at everyone out of fear. She wasn't potty-trained until she was a year old. She chewed up everything in the house. She ran away from the Freeman Family when they called her. One time she was even hit by a car. They wanted to get rid of her a million times, but felt she was needed in their program to help bullies, so the family kept working with her.
Today, she's potty trained, doesn't chew up stuff as much, and listens most of the time when they call her. She wears a prison outfit in the workshops and Lisa addresses all the things that her and bullies have in common, but tell kids that she loves her bully, and that Baby just needs help and to learn good behaviors so she can stop her bully behaviors.
