 Lisa's Story

 

I was a middle school drop out. I quit school in the 7th grade and ran away with an older boyfriend. Later I married him. In fact, I entered two abusive marriages by the time I was 18.

At 26, when I learned my husband had abused our three children, I decided to make some better choices for me and my children. I got my GED, went onto college where I made a 4.0, made the Dean's List, and learned to type some 60 wpm.

Soon after, I had horrible panic attacks, from all the abuse I suffered, and quit college. At home I felt led to write a book about my son, Brian and all the heart problems he suffered through and yet miraculously survived.

For five years I submitted that book to publishers. And for five long years rejection letters flooded my mailbox. Still I knew I was meant to write. So I began writing short stories and sending them out. For awhile the same thing happened, only rejection letters came.

But one day, the phone rang, and it was the editor from Guideposts for Teens. She said she loved my story they had just rejected three months ago and wanted to publish it!

That same year I had three more articles published and won the Writer of the Year Award at the American Christian Writers Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Since then I've had five books published, 500+ Articles and Stories, had my work appear in over 35 magazines, and won numerous awards.
